It's not just the constant close-ups and other tension-creating techniques, but the movies have gotten darker (WRT to lighting, that is) and actors mumble so many of their lines it makes you turn on CC.

I saw that Criterion has Duel with Dennis Weaver, the best TV movie of the week I can remember.
