the term "oil shale" is a misnomer because the resource is not actually oil - it's kerogen.

if my memory is correct, "getting" the stuff involves heating it to 900 degrees fahrenheit and requires enormous amounts of fresh water, which will soon be in short supply.

unfortunately the thermodynamic deficiencies of producing kerogen (oil shale) mean it will never have an EROEI ratio comparable to conventional oil.

hopefully i'm wrong and it can be utilized in some significant way but i'm not holding my breath.
