"What age would you consider as a minimum age for your "children that do need mind altering drugs", Patricia?

I don't think there is an arbitrary answer to your question. There are probably some children that may need some kind of drug therapy that have serious psychotic breaks early in life. If that situation does exist then I feel they should be treated by a Psychiatrist and monitored.
Certainly, the teenage years may reveal psychotropic drug
needy situations in individuals. True mental illness generally shows it's symptoms during the teens or early twenties.

Ritlin is another problem. I had a child that used it briefly but didn't like the affects......it made him sleepy. He is definitely an ADD/ADHD type but so is his father. They are both "type A" and like to dance to their own drummer. Both are businessmen...my son has an online business that he runs and makes money on top of his schooling. He has been lucky and hasn't gone BK during the dotcom meltdown!! LOL..........What I am trying to say is that they probably don't need a drug to make them mold into society's norms.
