[DHCP]

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

as i understand it, DHCP allows a network administrator to reserve a range of IP addresses for use by clients connecting to the network. in most cases there's no need for a client machine to have the same IP address from session to session, so by assigning them "dynamically" the administrator is able to 1) avoid having to manually assign a "static" (fixed) IP address to each machine that might connect to the intranet, and 2) get a lot more mileage out of a limited number of IP addresses since they're assigned "as needed". when a node disconnects from the network, the IP address is "freed" and goes back into the DHCP pool for reuse.
