I love my Pilot! Yes, the new models have the backlight. Check them out. As for learning grafiti, I didn't find it very hard, and proficienty comes with use, as well as with playing the (included) "giraffe" game for letter practice. I can take meeting notes, or write a phone number, at the necessary speed. Here are a couple of web sites of interest to Pilot users: inforamp.net is an excellent software archive, and has many other links. massena.com has nice photos of the inside of a Pilot, so you don't have to void the warrenty opening yours. Don't miss "My Dog Ate My Pilot".
