First, I don't think we can assume that the OS that to be included in the consumer group is going to be Windows98. It could very well be the consumer OS to be built on the NT kernel, unless they're convinced that such a thing just isn't going to happen. It might even be something built on CE if they get very imaginative.

Well the seattletimes story I posted a little earlier states that it is Windows ( Win 98 is obviously "consumer" oriented.)

Remember there were stories that the next consumer OS would be built on the NT kernel. The stories were out there for the longest period of time. Recently, I read comments from a MSFT exec. that they were not committed to such a shift (Sorry, I don't remember where i read it but I believe it could be CNET type of news service).

Why would they want to build the next consumer OS on the NT kernel under the present circumstances? Then the DOJ case would more likely apply to both corporate and consumer Operating systems. If they keep them as clearly separate and distinguisable products, the DOJ won't be able to interfere with Windows NT (2000) as it is not a monopoly product. Why have both products under DOJ attack?
Only if Windows2000 reaches monopoly status would building the next consumer OS be on the NT kernel makes sense.

It is clear as can be!!!!! IMHO.
That is why we will never see one "unified" Operating system base from MSFT.
Windows CE will also be separate for the same reason unless it becomes a near monopoly---which is not the case now.
