Jerry - IP over Netware vs Native IP

This is an issue that very few people really appreciate. Both Novell and Microsoft have legacy protocols with thousands of applications written to IPX/SPX and NetBIOS transports.....

They both had a problem supporting these applications in an IP environment until they both came up with solutions to encapsulate the IPX and the NetBios. NDIS does the trick for MS and Netware IP does the trick for Novell. They isolate apps from having to dell with IP while allowing them to retain calls to the legacy protocols (IPX and NetBIOS). The tools encapsulate the protocols and stripe them out at the client and server. Neat way to handle it but it costs you speed.

As you point out - Native IP support is completely different.
One thing to remember - Any apps using calls to IPX will not operate under Native IP (Any Apps making Native calls to Netbios will not work either). Novell has already won this battle - They support IP.... Native IP support is a headache for developers.

Native IP will require rewrites on "Non Pure" apps - Rewrites for MS and Novell Apps. You will hardly ever see a "Pure Native IP LAN" unless they don't want to do any work with standard issue software and tools....from Novell and MS.

We all want pure solutions and open standards but as usual the practical considerations make the theoretical arguement a mute point.
There will, more often then not, be another protocol beyond Native IP on the LAN be it Netware IP or IPX/SPX or MS "Encapsulation of Netbios" with TCP/IP.

AS the applications we use evolve so will the need for Native IP - It will take time.... Not in my opinion a major selling point for business users and small nets. If it isn't in NT 5.0 or MOAB no one will really care as you point out it is in the "Bowels" of the OS and not up on anyone's rader screen yet IMHO.

Now maybe with NDS and the WEB it is more important but thats another post....

Cheers

Jim
