I admit that I haven't yet applied this method systematically to stock prices. Where I have used it the underlying stochastic trends extracted are fairly smooth and give a much better idea of the current direction of the trend than just looking at the time series. The resutls are similar to moving averages but aren't so backward looking in that they use all the data in an optimal fashion (given the underlying assumptions).
