My understanding is that:

Kensington has voluntarily halted trading today, pending their 'much awaited' news release tomorrow.

To answer your question about halting in general:

I believe that either the exchange or the company can stop trading on the company's stock. Stopping trading pending a news release allows all investors to read the press release at the same time. An exchange can stop trading in order to investigate the company or unusual activity in the trading of the company's shares (ie: Comparator Systems IDID).

The company is certainly excited about the potential of their find, but I would expect them to be. My gut tells me that they have reason to be excited. The moment of truth approaches !!
