Duke Catawba 1 S.C. nuke to stay off line for "days"

NEW YORK, Aug 29 - Duke Energy Co. said its 1,129 megawatt Catawba 1 nuclear unit in South Carolina will remain shut for a number of days during repairs after it automatically tripped off line early on Friday.

"It will be off line for a while. It is going to be days while we make the repairs and do some additional maintenance," said Duke spokesman Tom Shiel.

He said one of the problems was confined to a small valve, called the reactor coolant system letdown, that is normally used in controlling the chemistry in the coolant water and did not affect the coolant system itself.

Shiel would not comment, for competitive reasons, on exactly when the unit was expected to return to service.

Catawba 1, about six miles northwest of Rock Hill, South Carolina, tripped off line early Friday following a problem with a temperature protection system.

Meanwhile, the adjacent 1,129 MW nuclear Unit 2 continued to operate at full power.
