Joe,

According to "Mobile Cellular Telecommunications" -Lee, pg.547

Number of timeslots = 6 (per channel)
Transmission rate = 6.5-kbps/slot

According to the Post article, I would interprit the improved technology to be 2 slots dedicated to each channel.

The two (GSM & iDEN) architecures are similiar. Both consist of mobile stations (MS), the base station subsystem (BSS), the network and switching subsystem (NSS), and the operation subsytem (OSS).

Comparing to GSM, you can compare handovers, call control, and cell selection.

I'm pretty sure GSM is a combination of FDMA and TDMA and has a slow frequency hopping interface. I don't believe Nextel (iDEN) does.
