Thomson Announces Receivers On-Time
- -July 7, 1997

Thomson used the recent Wireless Cable Association convention in Anaheim, Calif., to announce the implementation of its new digital wireless television receivers as part of Pacific Bell Digital TV operations in the Los Angeles basin.

As prime contractor for the development effort, Thomson celebrated the "on-time" delivery of the microwave-transmitted digital TV system now used in Pacific Bell's multichannel multipoint distribution service (MMDS).

Like Thomson's Digital Satellite System technology, the line-of-sight MMDS system produces high-quality pictures and sound. Thomson said as many as 150 channels are possible with the Pacific Bell service.

"The public's growing interest in more television programming has opened the way for new delivery methods of TV reception in the home," said Al Baker, digital product management general manager. Unlike direct-to-home satellite systems, the MMDS system will include local channels in the digital package.

As part of the contract, Thomson developed the digital entertainment receivers and digital head-end system used for the digital microwave TV transmissions. It also led the development team for the RCA-brand digital MMDS set-top box used to view programming. The boxes use DiviCom MPEG-2 encoding and delivery systems, NagraVision conditional access system and ComStream digital modulation systems.
