Dermot,

Its probably the right strategy. They won't emulate Yahoo in a matter of weeks since Yahoo has a fairly sophisticated site now which they have also extended internationally. But, I think there is a great need for these public accumulation points or "portals". The internet has no unified information architecture (everybody has a private view) and these portals provide much needed structure. We will probably see this structure emerge rapidly over the next 5 years (somewhat analogous to the TV networks).

My own opinion is that services like AOL might be in trouble when the next generation of Internet users realize there is no need for that kind of service and other smaller and cheaper local providers enter the picture.
