Philips Readies DVD Hardware, Content

Philips Consumer Electronics Co. is leveraging the strength of hardware and content partners to bring DVD hardware to market. The company's new unit (model 400AT) is sourced from Toshiba and will sell for $549.

The company plans to sell a Philips-manufactured player in Europe and Asia Pacific this fall if software availability warrants the debut.

A second, higher-end model manufactured by Philips will be available in the United States come fall.

Philips is teaming with PolyGram Video (of which parent company Philips Electronics N.V. is the majority owner) in a retail rental program, which begins June 24.

PolyGram plans to release 7 titles by June 24 and more than 20 by year's end.

Philips has formed a DVD entertainment group based at PolyGram Filmed Entertainment in Beverly Hills, Calif. Emiel Petrone, Philips executive vice president, will head up the group.
