Lobbyists Still Like the Democrats

Power Line

The Center for Responsive Politics says that over the past fifteen years, lobbyists have contributed more money to Democrats than to Republicans, by a $53 million to $48 million margin. This seems remarkable, as Republicans have been in the majority in both houses of Congress for eleven of those years.

The explanation is the Democrats' domination of lobbyists' contributions when they were in the majority. In the early 1990s, more than 70% of lobbyists' money consistently went to Democrats. Now, however, the Republican majority outdraws the Dems only 55% to 45%, which corresponds to the Republicans' majority. So on a per capita basis, lobbyists still find it as worthwhile to donate to Democrats as to Republicans, even though they are in the minority.

That is pretty hard to understand; somehow lobbyists have concluded that they get enough bang for the buck out of contributions to Democrats to make up for their minority status.
