Campus Networks Selects IBM to Create Broadband, Wireless Campus Networks; Companies Will Help Colleges and Universities 'Unplug'
SOMERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 2001--Campus Networks, Inc. (cn(i)) said today it has selected IBM to build, operate and maintain the infrastructure for high-speed, wireless college, government and corporate campus networks.
cn(i) will provide mobile, broadband access to data such as the Internet and college or corporate intranets and integrated voice and messaging services. cn(i)'s campus coverage will be ubiquitous, both in-buildings and outdoors. Services will also be provided to off-campus facilities such as housing.
The value added applications and services will be provided by cn(i) through a multi-channel portal. For each campus, cn(i) will have a version of the portal co-branded with the university or enterprise and customized with applications, services and content desired by the school or enterprise and tailored for that customer and the specific region. For campuses with a mobile computing program, such as IBM's Thinkpad University, the cn(i) wireless network will be a complementary extension for enhanced student service.
In reviewing early plans with U.S. universities, UCLA said the concept is attractive for educators. "cn(i)'s solution is an exciting opportunity for universities to provide wireless services, without the complexities of managing the system," said Terence Hsiao, Director, Business Development, UCLA.
cn(i) selected IBM Global Services as its key partner to manage and build the network infrastructure. IBM will provide project management, network design, hosting, Web-site design, install the equipment and operate and maintain the wireless network.
"The demand for broadband, wireless connectivity is exploding, and IBM Global Services will help us quickly deploy high performance networks," said Billy J. Parrot, chairman of cn(i). "IBM's technical abilities and wireless expertise will help us facilitate and deliver the high-quality service our customers expect."
Dean Douglas, general manager, mobile e-business, IBM Global Services, adds: "IBM has been building wireless systems for several years, helping the world's largest companies extend e-business to mobile devices. Now we're helping service providers build the wireless infrastructure for colleges and universities that will bring to millions of students and administrators the convenience of any time/any place information access and communications."
