That's just not true. We had virtually no military until WW I.

For most of (But not all of) that time we had a small military but not virtually no military. Also we had very little non-military federal spending. The military was a fraction of its current size but so was everything about the Federal government.

BTW we have the largest military budget in the world.

Measured by money spent or power available, this was never in doubt. Measured by number under arms it is not true. Measured by any method it doesn't address the issue of historical % of government spending the went to the US military.
