Nader tries a new tactic against Microsoft:

With the U.S. Department of Justice's future
course of action regarding Microsoft Corp.
still uncertain, public advocate Ralph Nader
is taking matters into his own hands yet
again.

Nader has sent letters to six top PC makers--Compaq Computer
Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Gateway 2000 Inc., Micron Technology
Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Packard Bell NEC--asking them to
offer consumers "the opportunity to buy computers with non-Microsoft
operating systems pre-installed."

Nader urges the hardware vendors to consider alternatives such as
Linux, BeOS, Caldera Inc.'s OpenDOS/Spider and Apple Computer
Inc.'s Rhapsody.

What, no OS/2? One of the main reasons I'm not using OS/2 or one of the others that Nader mentions is my CAD software, which won't be porting to other OS's anytime soon.
