It's lost on many people that most advances, though we tend to honor one individual, occur within a time period where a number of people often arrive at similar solutions. The development (or discovery) of Calculus by Newton and Leibnez is a good example. Another would be the invention of the airplane. Who we honor tends to depend on what language we speak in the above two cases. In the case of Wallace & Darwin, they were both English, but Darwin clearly had a much more complete synthesis, and had been at it longer than Wallace.
