Dave, yes, I had a similar reaction, until I noticed that the "faberge egg" Vertu is "hold at an arms length".

"added functionality" is interesting, as the electronic ones in general are not a function of handmade,
customer specific code for $20,000, as is the manufacturing, styling, craftmanship of jewelry, gold, leather,
personal inscriptions,etc..

But it seems possible that some room is left in the flashmemories for the personal joy of the end user??

On the other hand Nokia has had a very careful strategy of introducing almost all "top-model" features
into even the cheapest kiddy-phones, as long as they do not add cost (software) and sometimes
the other way around. (games in top models)

But one thing seem sure, that Frank Nuovo at least has different "design restrictions" within Vertu, as
well as new ones, same for "designer freedom".

Who knows, he might go to the history with yearly increasing art auction prices on the limited
existing "Nuovo handsets", like the Faberge Eggs (hmm, to get really philosophic, that
would maybe demand a similar disruption in the present wealth structure as the russian
revolution did to their emperial wealth??)

Ilmarinen

That is, to my knowledge much of the eggs, etc Faberge and his little factory made got out
on the "free market" when the aristocracy of Russia, etc decided they needed the money
in their new residencies. (although some were looted and sold instantly)

That usually increases the "value" of the stuff, the new owner can enteretain his guests
on the both historically and personally entertaining stories, sometimes very bloody and
violent, connected to the object, as well as who married whome, to catch the
romantic side.
(there is one special class of objects in Finland, often received as payments for a horse
load of fire wood, etc during those years in St Petersburg, later objects might be
more connected to organazied crime, all those icons, etc)
