"bmp I get a screen that says open or save and nothing happens no matter what I do. Maybe MS doesn't view BMP files ??????"

That's probably true. You may have to open BMP's with a paint program. You'll have to do the same thing you just went thru; ie View-Folder Options-File Types and then scroll thru the list to find just the extension BMP and then change it to open with your paint program.

If BMP, JPG and GIF's are together as one registered file type, you can edit them to separate ones and open each with a different program.

"next to my gif and jpg files it still says type to be PSP"
You can edit everything under View-Folder Options-File Types. You can change the name, description, what the icon looks like, etc. You can even add totally new extensions with new descriptions, new actions, and new icons (I had to do this lately when I started playing with an MP3 encoder and decoder. Went in and entered the new .MP3 extension, named it, selected what program to open it with, etc).

Play around with it. You'll get a feel for it and get everything set up the way you want it. If you screw it up, you can always go back and change it again or reenter it.
