During the last 6 months there have been 212 institutional buyers of AMAT and 192 sellers. Although there were more buyers than sellers, the sellers sold more stock and total institutional holdings declined 11.59 million. Institutions today own 116.18 million shares or 64.77% of the outstanding stock.

However, virtually every Wall Street analyst is negative or neutral. The mean estimate of 15 analysts for the October quarter is 45›, followed by 43› (mean of 10 analysts) for the December quarter. In other words, expectations are very low.

Semiconductor equipment shipment dates were pushed our very quickly over a short time span in the spring. That can reverse just as quickly, although no one knows when it will start. Don't forget that not a single end user product is declining; they all are growing and using more chips every month. Also there is a significant technology change coming to 0.35 micron. Chip makers have to install that equipment if their competitor does or else they will be at a substantial cost of goods disadvantage.
