NEWS AFTER BELL: ALAMEDA, Calif., Oct 17 (Reuters) - Ascend Communications Inc <ASND.O> officials declined to comment about market speculation that Lucent Technologies Inc <LU.N> was looking to buy Ascend next. Ascend shares were 1-1/4 at 34-7/8 in late afternoon trading. The Wall Street Strategies newsletter linked the strong performance, on a day when other technology stocks were down sharply, to a buyout rumor. Stock of Ascend, which makes telecommunication gear for Internet service providers, has jumped several times in recent months on speculation that it would be a nice fit for larger networking gear vendors.
