I think we agree on something here Steve. What we have here is Neocon takeover of Wilsonian ideas. It isnt that simple whether emplyed by LBJ in Vietnam or Bush in Iraq. Doesnt necessarily mean either war didnt have some valid reasons for being fought but democracy like we have it here is not one that is valid. I lean back to self determination and freedom from foreign control and freedom from tyranny as possible reasons. Neither Ho or Saddam were good guys and in fact saddam was far more dangerous because left to his own devices Ho didnt have an axe to grind with the US sans the war. He might have needed the US to offset chinese power on the border at that time. And although saddam was an animal, he was significantly weaker than we/i thought at the time.
Truth be told iran has a popular natonalist ruler who is an asshole as does Palestine. So even when you add some democracy you might get something worse than what existed before. Oh well. Bush was right about one thing--this is hard stuff and sometimes when we pontificate as i have just done we dont always get it right either.
