What value should one place on the Instant Messaging and Buddies List features at AOL? The community drawing power comes into play with these communications features. Sign on at prime time and your list shows you who is on and available for private or group chat. Friends, family, coworkers. I don't know: Is their a web equivalent? Really? Earlier today, my son in Florida was helping with a printer question for his grandmother in Tennessee, while his uncle in Ohio joined in. It was spontaneous. This stuff makes a subscriber extra "sticky" after a while. Not necessarily loyal, but sticky. Future online customers will be making provider choices (well, so are current online users, come to think of it)....one of the considerations will have to be the ease of instant communications...and how big the base is to communicate with.
