There used to be a Navy base in L.A. Harbor before Clinton closed it down. We had a beautiful clubhouse for our yacht club there but it got torn down. (Always a sore point because the whole base was turned over the China Overseas Company. Besides the tankers and container ships, there would be a complement of Navy ships that were always impressive to see. Once a year, the Navy brings a ship up from San Diego and if you have the connections, you can ride along. I've been on a carrier, a helicopter flattop, a couple of destroyers.

Always fun to take a day cruise around the harbor, go down to Long Beach for lunch. About 10 years ago, JXM, his wife and newborn JXN, and I sailed down to Long Beach and met Sarki and her husband at the Lighthouse for lunch.
