Sub-$600 Laptop Computer Makes Accessing E-mail and Surfing the Web Easy and Affordable
PASADENA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 25, 1997--EarthLink Network Inc. (Nasdaq:ELNK - news) Tuesday announced that it will be the exclusive Internet service provider (ISP) on Brother International's new GeoBook personal digital notebooks.
With an estimated street price of around $599, the new GeoBooks are a simple and economical way to use e-mail and access the World Wide Web from remote locations using EarthLink's award-winning TotalAccess Internet access service.
The agreement will open the door to the Internet for those consumers who cannot afford a fully configured laptop PC or are too intimidated by the technology involved. According to International Data Corp. (IDC) research, 65 percent of households nationwide that do not own computers cited price issues and/or a general fear of technology as the reason (IDC, 1997).
By targeting the under-$600 price point, GeoBooks will bring the hardware necessary to access the Web and e-mail within reach. And by making EarthLink the exclusive ISP for the laptop computers, GeoBook owners can take advantage of the easy, fast and dependable Internet access services that PC Magazine recently honored with its Editors' Choice award.
''We're very excited to be the ISP of choice on all of Brother's new GeoBooks,'' said Bob Johnson, vice president of marketing and market development at EarthLink Network. ''The GeoBook's affordability and simplicity are a great match with EarthLink's reliability, speed and ease of use. Buyers will be getting a great entry-level Internet access solution for a great price.''
EarthLink Network has arranged a quick and simple registration process for GeoBook owners, to get them up and running in a matter of minutes via the World Wide Web. In addition, EarthLink will waive its normal $25 setup fee to allow purchasers to try its service risk-free.
''We were very impressed with EarthLink's service and customer support, and thought it was a perfect fit with the GeoBook's ease of use,'' said Dean Shulman, senior vice president at Brother International. ''We wanted to ensure that the Internet functions on the GeoBook fit in seamlessly with the overall product, and our agreement with EarthLink ensures that.''
