<By the way, RISC comes in more than one flavor and is an architectural direction not any particular chip.>

Primarily favored by UNIX vendors. Like I said.

<The Merced will also be a RISC chip, and the industry has pretty much decided that RISC is the way to go.>

The Merced, as I understand it will be a hybrid chip that will allow the running of CISC style x86 code. Current, popular RISC chips don't achieve this without software emulation.

<Hardware architecture is not a black art and neither is chip production.>

I never said it was, I said the chip business is a black art. The primary reason Wintel bests so many companies is because the mgmt of many tech entities don't realize that a business is much more than architecture and production. Marketing and execution is more important than most other categories. Books that I suggest you read, The Alchemy of Finance, Geroge Soros and Inside the Tornado, you know the author. What is the purpose of making something if you can't sell it. In the case of AMD, shat is the use fo selling something if you can't make it:-)
