Well at the time i was on a college swim team and the coach said everyone 'had to' compete in this triathlon.

I'd never run a day in my life. But I did used to compete in century races (bicycling) and the annual Pier to Pier race in Hermosa Beach, CA. (held during the surf festival)

This race was back in '80 and wasn't organized too great. they put running first, biking second, and swimming last.

Running: I came in dead last. Puked up the raw eggs too.
Biking: I passed tons of people (I used to race bikes in the century races (100 miles) before college). Ended up in the mid front of the pack
Swimming: At first when I started swimming, I discovered I couldn't sprint. every time I tried, I'd feel my legs and arms start to cramp up, so I just cruised for awhile. Then when i figured I must be sufficiently rested, i started sprinting.

All of a sudden all of my muscles locked up. and i sank like a stone to the bottom of the lake (no kidding). It was pitch black down there. all I could move was my fingers. I had an idea which way the shore was and started crawling with my fingers in that direction. I managed to crawl that way all the way to shore (it wasn't terribly long). But not panicing saved my life. Because I found out later, no one saw me go down. If I panicked, I'd have died.

Once on shore I discovered I had a few more miles of swimming to go so after awhile I got back in. and started swimming. I happened to notice I saw some guy standing on the shore twice, so I stopped treaded water and discovered I'd somehow swam to the middle of the lake and was swimming in circles around an island. I don't know what he was doing there but i was definitely in the wrong place. I swam back to the course and eventually finished.

I finished 3rd from the last among our college team mates. I managed to finish the race about the time most of the people finished.

Since then I took up running as a hobby and one of my favorite activites now is mountain running. U run for miles on hiking trails. I prefer the Sierra Nevada ranges because of the elevation involved.

u asked...
