Nitpicking is certainly in fashion here - I think Fowler is the clear champ, but JMHO as usual.

Having worked in public affairs a long time I thought the article you posted on bias was dead on. But sometimes people are just careless or copycat in how they use words, with no real meaning attached.

One reason I came to loathe the kind of press statements the State Department makes is the wooden language they delight in. I suppose it has its uses in the diplomatic coded-phrase world, but it's junk in terms of a public image.
