Keith- I don't need a lot of fancy stuff.

For me, all I want is a limited system (keyboard, pointing device,
screen and storage) which is responsive and reliable. A path
from mind to hand to computer that is unimpeded. The quicker the
better. The longer without distraction the better. Less is more.


If you want a fast, stable OS on which to run Java, I suspect that Linux is the best currently available. You might spend lots of extra time working around problems and limitations of BeOS, since it is a pretty new OS, whereas Linux has been around for quite a while and has lots of users and support available to find what you are looking for.
