Wall St firms to launch alternative trading system
9/27/2006 9:00:23 AM

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Six leading brokerage firms on Wednesday introduced an alternative trading system aimed at providing increased liquidity for block trades.

The system, which would be open to all qualifying broker dealers, could raise competitive pressure on established exchange companies like NYSE Group Inc. (NYX.N) and Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. (NDAQ.O).

The firms -- including Citigroup Inc. (C.N), Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS.N), Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. (LEH.N) and Merrill Lynch & Co. (MER.N) -- said the system is called Block Interest Discovery Service (BIDS). Terms were not disclosed.

The system, whose investors also include Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and Switzerland's UBS AG (UBSN.VX), expects to start trading early next year, the companies said in a statement.

The system is aimed at allowing mutual funds and other big investors to find legitimate counterparties for trades while maintaining anonymity.

Designed by Alberta Market Solutions, a capital market infrastructure firm, BIDS expects to name a chief executive in the next few weeks, they said.
