It's humanitarian, not economic or (very much) political. As far as the UN, Haiti is a former French colony, so they feel some responsibility.

The OAS would be great, but I don't think they could be mobilized in time. Hell, I'm not sure anyone can get mobilized in time.

If we can't afford 5K-10K troops in our own hood, for a cake walk like Haiti, you have to wonder what would happen if something big broke out somewhere in the world. As it is, for the first time we've called up reserve units for over a year of service.

The "reserves" are now part of our "regular" armed services.
