How close could it be, a dead heat? You win by one vote, you win. The cheating will cancel itself out on both sides.

But the thing is, we are not a democracy. We vote for people to represent us. The framers of the Constitution didn't really trust the people. Thus the safety net; if the people made a stupid choice, the electoral college, in their wisdom, could put it right.
