Hi Paul,

Yep, I've learned from experience and from the advise of others that buying during the first 1/2 hour (about) is a mistake a lot more often than it isn't. Aside from a gap up like you described, it is also the time when market orders placed the night before get bunched up, pushing up the price. Traders will usually start profit taking about then which drives the price back down. From what I've seen about 1/2 hour before the close is often the low point of the day. It's when day traders are cashing out of the market before the end of the close. It's also a good reason not to place market orders at the open.
