miles is a long ways.. the grocery store was long blocks, but a straight shot. nothing complicated. and the pool place was 5 blocks with 2 turns, but I repeated the movements in my brain. I made a mental image of my area in my brain and I didn't go beyond it mostly. when I took buses to shop, I'd print maps out and take them with me. but I stuck to my area and would study maps of it.

my father and I still fuss at times when I go on a chore for him. he talks 'turn north'. huh? and in the wilds, even left/right gets odd. we sit and draw a map, with markers (like the red barn on the left).

I get very nervous out of my 'zone'. back then I could tell you how many steps it was to get to the cafe, or the pool hall.

my sister has perifeal (sp?) vision. and her vision loss came in her early 40's. and she's smart. a good thinka bout alabama is the school for the blind, thanks to helen keller. she was able to go there and learn well the skills needed to get about and adapt. she buses around and goes about. quite amazing.
