The Dems have not shown the ability that Rove & co have to use peripheral issues with their base. The whole gay marriage thing leading up to 2004 was brilliant. Bush calling for a Constitutional Amendment, all the state ballot measures. Once the election was in the bag, they largely stopped the bashing.

Partly I think the right has many more strong fears which motivate them, so that sort of approach is much more successful with them than it would be on the left where they are just are not as paranoid.

Wait and watch Nov 2006. Iran is going to be pivotal. Its the perfect storm all over again. Bush spends the time working diplomacy from every angle, showing what a wise and careful leader he is while faced with this grave threat. The pressure will be gradually raised. The American public will be reminded that this President has the moral fiber to do what needs being done. But nothing will be done before November. It will be pretty clear in late October, that something needs to be done, and clearly this President needs the strong support of Congress. So the Dems will once more be falling all over themselves trying to LOOK tough on Iran, while the American voters will see to it that Bush has the backing he needs in such dangerous times. JMHO!
