It seems you are suggesting that some shorts also have long positions they can use or borrow from. The idea that they are selling now would help explain the extremely thin volume.

There's another related aspect, which is that the only way to get an buy order filled now is with a market order. I think virtually all the buys are going into the MM's accounts. At this point, the MM's are colluding in keeping the price down until they've shaken out the cheap stock.
