Lewis and Clark passed by not far away, but I'm not sure they went down this particular valley.

Yes, it is very tough country. I remember a family trip when I was a kid. There was a big sign on the highway advertising "See a Hand Built Road One Mile Long" or something to that effect. It was supposed to draw people in to pay to see a road a man built to his house with hand tools. This was before big money entertainment sites on the road, you must remember. People actually paid him to see that.

Highway 93 has been built for a long time, but Highway 12, the one Donald rode up from Oro Fino, was finished in the 1950s. I remember when it was still wild country and hiked down the Lochsa River on a trail before the highway was built. It's just like the North Fork of the Salmon River, with steep rock cliffs and dangerous curves all the way. I think there's a 90 mile stretch with no gas stations. I remember the news at the time declaring that Highway 12 was the most expensive highway in the US because of the difficulty of building it through granite cliffs.

It's still a gorgeous trip. I think Donald's last day was a happy one, full of wonder at the beauty of his route.
