IRC (Internet Realtime Chat) is an open standard that any person or company that sets up a site can support directly or through a Java application. If you wanted to setup a large chat room for something like, say, Harley Davidson, you could do that now. It's just another example of open standards being used on the Net. It could turn out that IRC becomes a standard feature of all sites (a "chat" button) if and when general site guidelines are established. Such guidelines provide users with a consistent interface which is something we are going to need on the Net.

As somebody pointed out, people don't care about the underlying technology, but they do care that chat services are only at provided when and where AOL thinks they are needed, nonsense.
