Interesting triangle - Tate & Lyle, Igene, Microbia:

The Microbia subsidiary is developing microbes to aid in a fermentation-based process of making carotenoids, a family of compounds responsible for the pink color of salmon meat and the orange in carrots. He estimated that the U.S. market for manufactured carotenoids, which are well-known antioxidants, is $1 billion.

"The bottom line is there is a lot of optimism right now ... for fermentation-based processes to displace a number of (ingredients) that are now based on oil and petro-based chemicals," said Bailey, a microbial physiologist who joined Microbia nearly five years ago after working in senior positions at St. Louis-based Monsanto Co.'s NutraSweet Kelco unit and Broomfield, Colo.-based startup ZeaGen Inc.

In addition to needed capital, Tate & Lyle provides Microbia PE with the backing of a $4.65 billion corporation with 17 fermentation plants spread over four continents.
