<My first thought is that this takes the pressure off of California to approve all the fracking needed to develop the resource>

That's a funny statement considering oilpatch insiders have been whispering for a couple of years that the Monterey Shale isn't what it was cracked up to be. Good indications of this are the fact that many oil companies have been poking and prodding it for several years and have found very little to be really excited about.

As with all of the shale fields so far, everyone is different and no doubt eventually the key to unlocking the Monterey will be found and estimated recoverable reserves will be adjusted once again. I am confident that if the oil is there, it will be produced sooner or later even if it requires different technology and/or techniques than what we are now familiar with in the Bakken or Permian Basin, etc.

However, I do agree with you that anyone would be crazy to believe any numbers coming from the EIA.
