If you are in the business of making semiconductor chips
you have a pretty simple decision to make: either buy the
latest semiconductor capital equipment and stay in the
business, or stop buying equipment and go out of the business.
But without up to date capital equipment you are definitely
going to go out of the business of chipmaking within a few
months as the technology advances and your competitors
keep pace. So if you are selling capital equipment to
the chipmakers, you hold their future in your hands.
Pretty simple stuff. Common sense. Basic logic. Either
you keep pace or you are history. Or you could start
making potato chips instead.
