Police in Moneta, Virginia, said a shooter fired at a WDBJ television media crew in the middle of their live shot at Bridgewater Plaza, killing the cameraman and correspondent and fleeing the scene.

WDBJ 7 reported the names of the two killed were Alison Parker and Adam Ward. Parker was 24; Ward, the photographer, was 27. The two were at the plaza for a story related to tourism when somebody fired shots, sending Parker running and the cameraman to drop his equipment, Fox News aid. Facebook posted a clip of their live shot, as it was interrupted.

Franklin County Sheriff Department spokesman Phillip Young said the shooting occurred in the early Wednesday morning hours, but a motive isn’t yet known. Fox News reported Parker and Ward were engaged to be married.

Law enforcement officials are actively seeking the suspect, and are planning to give out a description to the public soon.

Station manager Jeffrey Marks made a statement to the public shortly after the shooting: “[We are] very, very sad to report we have determined … that Alison and Adam died this morning … We do not know a motive, we do not know who the suspect is. … [Police] are working very diligently to track down the motive and the person responsible for this terrible crime. I cannot tell you how much they were loved. … Our hearts are broken.”

Moneta is 25 miles or so east of Roanoke.
