It's not so much the paycheck they get, it's the control of the public's money and how it's going to be spent. Not to mention the "power" and perks that go along with the job. Our mayor, an Irishman, is quite fond of a "drop of the crather" (as the Clancy Brothers say in the song "Finnegan's Wake") once in awhile. He drops in all the bars and restaurants in town and, of course, he's treated to whatever he wants. Nice perk. He's actually an ok mayor but we all know what he's really interested in.

One councilman wanted a variance that would allow a restaurant to be privately owned inside a local hotel. He got it. And he was the one who was the principle of the corporation behind the restaurant. Only had to serve a year to get that one.

Another one insisted that a parking structure be built where one wasn't needed and that the city pay the contractor $76,000 per parking spot. The council voted for it. Wow! Big surprise. His brother was the contractor. Don't know where they are now. Moved away to some other town.

Then we had a councilman who led a drive to get rid of all the trees along Main Street and re-landscape downtown, which consisted of 10 square blocks. Do you think they could use a local company or even one from California to do the landscaping? Nope! Had to be one from New England. Yep! You guessed it. His uncle's company.

Didn't make any difference that the citizens were shouting at the tops of their voices at the council meetings, the council still passed these incredibly expensive and useless projects. They didn't care if they got voted out. They all understood that they each had a pet project and they would each support the other. It goes on year after year.

Except now things are changing. The mayor in his column in the local paper said that Gov Arnold is going to "borrow" $1 million from our town and in 3 years pay it back. He said it will never happen, the state will just re-borrow the money. So they have to cut the budget even more now.

I'm sure this goes on all over the place.
