Al Re....What joy?

The lesson is that the support of your allies is important.
Absolutely, important, but not critical. Also, I would say some allies, maybe even a majority, but not everyone would be important.
And that support is achieved when the leaders of the nations with which we are allied enjoy the support of their population.
From a US standpoint, I think the support of the leaders, is more important than the support of the population; however leaders certainly could, and would be more supportive, if their populations, also supported the measure.
In Spain 90% of the population disagreed with Aznar on Iraq.
Which is true, however, it seems Anzar without the bombings would have won another term; so what does that tell you. That that 90% didn't have that strong of a feeling against the war, that they would vote against Anzar, until the bombings
The Spanish would have rallied behind their leader, if bush had pursued policies conducive to unity, rather than policies that today have earned our country the disaffection of the entire world.
That is a mixed message. In order to pursue policies conductive to unity, you are saying our president should have taken a poll in Spain, and conducted our foreign policy accordingly. Which is ludicrous. Perhaps, if we had done that in 1941, France would be speaking German today. Allies should help out allies, whatever the circumstances, especially where treaties are involved. In the case of France, where members of Chiracs gov. took bribes from Saddam, to expect the US to change its policies would also be ridiculous. WWII was hardly a joy ride for us either, but we didn't shrink from our duty, because of the inconvenience, and neither should they. |
