I understand you point. But there is a need in the market for a cheap device to cruise the Net and do E-mail. The PC is too expensive for that. Today only 5% of the world's population have access to the Information Age. The Information age will not be a reality with a PC paradigm.

In the end if NC doesn't take off and WebTV is the preferred standard, the reality is that those appliances will need to be managed by big database software and we are back to Oracle and IBM.

There is an interesting article in the Software Magazine Jan 97 called Net Offensive. Interview of Ray Lane President and COO of Oracle. It explains very well the Network Computing Paradigm.
