<You propose letting the Shia and Sunnis get themselves into a regional war in which the blood of perhaps millions of people will be shed before its all over??>

No, not that. I was just thinking that they are a greater threat to each other than to the other 5 billion people on Earth. And, I was pointing out a time-honoured way for a third party, with something to offer, to keep the peace [give or take a bit] by playing one off against the other.

I think that third party should be the NUN rather than a self-dealing oil president who is not representative of a democratic world [which of course doesn't exist yet].

It isn't really in Russian interests to have a virulent Iranian Islamic Jihad programme. Remember Beslan? That's Islamic Jihad. Part of the Umma. Russia is just "giving the USA their own Vietnam" [as per <...the fierce Polish expatriate, Zbignew Brzezinski. ... "We can give them their own Vietnam," he told Carter>, comment about Afghanistan and USSR/Gorby]

It also suits China to have the USA very, very busy in the middle east.

This part is good, if you have the staying power: <I would rather knock both of their Islamo-Fascist heads together and create a different solution that should appeal to humanity at large.. namely individual rights and democratic reform that keeps governments more focused upon bettering the lives of their own people, rather than mucking about trying to screw up the lives of their neighbors.>

Unfortunately, democracy doesn't really "better the lives of their own people" so much as self-deal to the current rulers [for the most part] and doesn't necessarily come to very good decisions at all. It's about concentration of benefits and diffusion of costs. It's only a half-way house to civilization.
