I am not a good housekeeper, but once in a while I go on a rampage and clean everything to the point of using toothpicks and Q-tips to clean all the little crevices and crannies in everything. I call it "detailing" the house. I told a friend of mine that I was going through one of those phases, and he told me that when his wife had cancer (she is cured now), while she was getting chemotherapy she began to clean the house, top to bottom, all the little stuff, just like that. The oncologist told him it was a common occurrance, that people who felt powerless and out-of-control felt better if there was something that they felt was under control.

Maybe it made your mother feel better that she had something under control?

I suspect she probably said more to you than that you looked like you were putting on a little weight. She was worried about you, worried about who would take care of you after she was gone, but she didn't know how to say it.
