I agree with you about energy. It's interesting just how many ideas we see now wrt alternate energy. Just shows every dark cloud has a silver lining- at least for us. I'm not sure I see one for the Iraqis. I'm not sure civil war will peter out, since I think Iraq is more diverse than Algeria was, and the problems (re the mixing of populations) are different than the problems that were seen in Algeria. I do not think the Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites will be able to live together peacefully, absent a very authoritarian figure at the helm- and I don't see that happening, because Bush sang his song of "freedom for the Iraqis" for too long to allow the rise of another brutal dictator there- although a brutal dictator is probably the only kind of leader which could hold the country together.

So maybe after a more extreme civil war and partition there will be peace, but I don't see a Shiite government (absent some extensive, or even more extensive, force) governing the country effectively.
